The Aspen Club - by Lynn Kloss
For more than 35 years, the Aspen Club has served northern Colorado – providing health and wellness services for adults 50+. Over 13,000 individuals are registered as members. Membership, services, and classes are free, and the organization provides a paper or electronic newsletter every two months with relevant articles, support, and classes to promote physical and emotional health. Services and classes are offered all across Larimer and Weld Counties and in partnership with our sister hospital, Longs Peak, in Longmont.
I recently spoke with a friend who took advantage of Aspen Club Medicare assistance. Two years ago, she had lost her Medicare Advantage insurance coverage when her partner died. The Medicare counselor at Aspen Club was able to walk her through the process of acquiring a Medigap plan to supplement Medicare. This advice is completely objective without an agenda to sell a product. This means that the advice is always in the best interest of the individual for both medical and prescription drug coverage.
Medicare counseling is one of the ongoing programs available through Aspen Club. Other such programs are EnhanceWellness coaching, CarFit Assessment, Advance Care Planning, and more. In addition, there are classes offered on nutrition, meditation, specific health conditions, advance directives, Medicare, memory, and many more. Class topics change very frequently and are often prepared from member suggestions. Classes are spread out between the Aspen Club locations to enable wide attendance. Registration can be done online or by phone.
A program that I have used in the past is Medication Review. A UCHealth pharmacist met with me by appointment to review the prescription drugs and supplements I take. I brought in all my bottles and we went through them. Many supplements I’ve taken for decades and couldn’t remember exactly why I was taking them. The pharmacist was able to educate me on what amounts of vitamins and minerals my body needs, reinforce my confidence in the medications I take and eliminate many items by replacing them with a multi-vitamin appropriate for my age and gender. This one-hour session has greatly simplified my life.
If you are over fifty years of age, you are invited to take advantage of the many services that Aspen Club offers to support your health and well-being.
